HP LaserJet 1020 Driver for Windows 11

Let us be direct about this, because most pages on the subject are not: there is no dedicated official Windows 11 driver for the HP LaserJet 1020. HP ended support for this model years ago and never released one. That does not mean the printer is dead — it can still run on Windows 11 through three separate workarounds, which are set out below.

The honest situation

HP discontinued support for the LaserJet 1020 and never published a Windows 11 driver for it. Any website offering you a direct "LaserJet 1020 Windows 11 driver" download is not being straight with you — no such official file exists. Those downloads frequently carry bundled adware, and there is no good reason to risk them when free, legitimate alternatives work.

The printer hardware is fine. It is the driver situation that needs a workaround, and there are three reliable ones.

Three workarounds that work

These are listed from simplest to most involved. Try them in order.

  • Windows Update built-in driver — plug the printer in via USB and let Windows install its own generic driver. Basic printing usually starts working immediately.
  • HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) PCL5 — HP's official universal driver, which supports a wide range of older LaserJet models. This is the most reliable of the three and the one we would recommend.
  • Compatibility mode — download the legacy Windows 7/8 driver, right-click the installer, open Properties › Compatibility, tick "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 8", then install.

If the printer shows as "Unspecified Device"

This is the classic LaserJet 1020 symptom on modern Windows. Open Control Panel › Devices and Printers, right-click the unspecified device and choose Properties, then Hardware › Properties › Change settings › Driver › Update driver. Choose "Browse my computer", then "Let me pick from a list", and select the HP LaserJet 1022 or 1018 class driver. Those models are close enough to the 1020 that ordinary text printing works correctly.

The USB port trap

The LaserJet 1020 is old hardware and it is notoriously unreliable through USB hubs and docking stations. Always plug it directly into a port on the computer itself, and prefer a USB 2.0 port over USB 3.0 if one is available. A large share of "it just will not install" reports come down to nothing more than this.

How to get it running on Windows 11

  1. 1

    Remove old entries

Settings › Printers & scanners → remove any LaserJet 1020/1018/1022 entries.

  2. 2

    Plug in directly

Connect via USB straight into the PC — not a hub or dock. USB 2.0 if possible.

  3. 3

    Let Windows try first

Restart the PC. Windows Update may install a working generic driver on its own.

  4. 4

    Install UPD PCL5

If that fails, download and install the HP Universal Print Driver (PCL5).

  5. 5

    Pick a class driver

Still nothing? In Device Manager, manually select the "HP LaserJet 1022" driver.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an HP LaserJet 1020 driver for Windows 11?

No dedicated official driver exists — HP ended support for this model. However, the printer can still be used through the HP Universal Print Driver (PCL5), the built-in Windows Update driver, or by installing the legacy driver in compatibility mode.

Can the LaserJet 1020 still work on Windows 11?

Yes. It just needs a workaround rather than an official installer. For most people the HP Universal Print Driver (PCL5) is the most reliable route.

The printer shows as "Unspecified Device". How do I fix it?

Update it through Device Manager and manually select the HP LaserJet 1022 or 1018 class driver. These are close enough to the 1020 that standard printing works.

Should I download a 1020 Windows 11 driver from a third-party site?

No. No official driver exists, so sites offering one are distributing something else — often adware or bundled software. Stick to HP's official Universal Print Driver.

Why does it not work through a USB hub?

The LaserJet 1020 is old hardware and does not communicate reliably through hubs or docking stations. Connect it directly to a USB port on the computer, ideally USB 2.0.
