Full Feature vs Basic — the real difference
Both drive the same printer, but they expose very different amounts of it:
- Printing — available in both.
- Scanning — Full Feature only. The Basic driver cannot scan at all.
- Ink level monitoring — Full Feature only. On a refillable tank printer this is genuinely useful.
- HP Smart interface and printer settings — Full Feature only.
- Install size — Basic is around 99 MB, Full Feature around 339 MB.
When you should not install Full Feature
There are legitimate reasons to choose Basic. If the machine is old and short on disk space, or the printer is being shared from a print server where scanning is irrelevant, the Basic INF driver is lighter and perfectly adequate. It also installs faster and consumes fewer background resources.
For everyone else — home users, students, small offices — Full Feature is the better choice, and the extra 240 MB is not worth optimising away.
Moving from Basic to Full Feature
Do not simply install one on top of the other. Uninstall the Basic driver first, restart the PC, and then install the Full Feature package. Running both simultaneously is a known source of conflicts and is a common cause of the "driver unavailable" error.
