HP Smart Tank 580 Wireless Setup

Wireless setup means joining the printer to your home network so any laptop or phone can print without a cable. On the HP Smart Tank 580 there are three ways to do it: the HP Smart app (easiest), the WPS button, or Wi-Fi Direct. Below is how each one works — and the single most common reason setup fails.

How wireless setup actually works

During setup the printer broadcasts its own temporary Wi-Fi signal. Your phone or PC connects to that signal, the HP Smart app hands over your home network name and password, and the printer then joins your network permanently. From that point on it is just another device on your Wi-Fi.

This handshake is why the printer needs to sit close to the router while you set it up. A weak signal during those first two minutes is enough to make the whole process fail halfway through.

The 2.4 GHz problem — read this before troubleshooting anything else

The Smart Tank 580 connects on the 2.4 GHz band only. It cannot see 5 GHz networks at all. Modern routers broadcast both bands under a single network name, and phones tend to prefer the faster 5 GHz one. The result is that your phone is on 5 GHz, the printer cannot find that network, and setup fails with no obvious explanation.

If setup keeps failing, this is almost always why. Temporarily move your phone onto the 2.4 GHz network (or split the bands in your router settings), run setup again, and it will usually complete first time.

Three ways to connect

  • HP Smart app — the easiest and the method HP recommends. The app finds the printer and joins it to your network for you.
  • WPS button — press WPS on your router, then hold the Wireless button on the printer for three seconds. No password needed.
  • Wi-Fi Direct — connect your device straight to the printer with no router involved. Useful for guests or temporary printing.

How to connect to Wi-Fi

  1. 1

Move the printer near the router

A strong signal during setup matters more than you would expect.

  2. 2

    Install HP Smart

Get the app on your phone or PC from 123.hp.com/setup.

  3. 3

    Switch to 2.4 GHz

Put your device on the 2.4 GHz network, not 5 GHz. This is the step most people miss.

  4. 4

    Tap Add Printer

In HP Smart, choose "Add Printer" and select the Smart Tank 580.

  5. 5

    Enter your Wi-Fi password

Pick your network, enter the password, and wait for confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect the HP Smart Tank 580 to Wi-Fi?

The simplest route is the HP Smart app. Switch the printer on, place it near your router, open the app, tap "Add Printer", choose your 2.4 GHz network and enter the password.

The printer cannot find my Wi-Fi network. Why?

Almost always because you are on a 5 GHz network. The Smart Tank 580 only supports 2.4 GHz. Move your phone or PC onto the 2.4 GHz band and run setup again.

Can I print without a router?

Yes. Wi-Fi Direct connects your phone or laptop straight to the printer with no network in between — useful for guests or temporary printing.

Do I need a driver for wireless setup?

Setup itself can be completed entirely in the HP Smart app. But to print and scan properly from a PC, installing the full-feature driver is still recommended.

What is the WPS method?

Press the WPS button on your router, then hold the Wireless button on the printer for about three seconds. The two negotiate a connection automatically, with no password required.
